NERC Explains Why Band A Electricity Tariffs Remain Unchanged

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has clarified why it has not yet reverted to the previous electricity tariff rates, despite a directive from the House of Representatives. Currently, Band A customers, who reportedly receive 20 hours of daily power supply, are charged ₦225 per kWh, up from the former rate of ₦66.

In response to public concerns about the tariff hike, the House of Representatives ordered a return to the previous rates. However, NERC spokesperson Usman Arabi stated that the commission has not received any official communication regarding this directive. Arabi explained, “We have not received official communication from the House on the directive. Typically, resolutions are communicated officially, but we have yet to receive this resolution.”

Meanwhile, some federal universities located in Band A areas have been struggling with increased electricity costs. Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, told Punch that the significant rise in energy bills is impacting university operations. He noted, “A nearly 300 percent increase in energy costs affects our operations just as it does for any organization.”
