The ongoing dispute traces back to the 2023 elections when the South-East zone nominated Ude-Okoye to replace Anyanwu, who had been selected as the PDP’s candidate for the Imo State governorship election. This nomination led to a series of legal battles that culminated in a December 2024 Court of Appeal ruling in favor of Ude-Okoye.

The tension heightened on December 31, 2024, when Ude-Okoye attempted to assume office at the party headquarters, but Anyanwu ordered the secretariat’s closure until January 13, creating a volatile situation.
