New INEC Boss Amupitan Convenes First Strategic Meeting With Top Directors Today

The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), will today (Thursday) preside over his first official meeting with the Commission’s directors at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

According to a circular released on Wednesday by Wilfred Ifogah, Deputy Director of Publicity, on behalf of the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, the meeting is scheduled to hold at 1:30 p.m. in the INEC Conference Hall.

The notice read:

“The Honourable Chairman of the Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, will be meeting with directors as follows — Date: Thursday, 23rd October, 2025; Time: 1:30 p.m.; Venue: Conference Hall, INEC Headquarters, Abuja.
Members of the INEC Press Corps are invited to cover the opening ceremony of the event.”

Amupitan’s maiden engagement as INEC Chairman comes shortly after his swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The ceremony officially ushers in Professor Amupitan as the substantive head of the electoral body, succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended earlier this month.

Aged 58, Amupitan is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos and was confirmed by the Senate last Thursday via a voice vote presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

His confirmation followed a rigorous screening session where he addressed lawmakers on key issues surrounding Nigeria’s electoral process and constitutional reforms.

President Tinubu had nominated Amupitan, describing him as a man of proven integrity, non-partisan disposition, and deep expertise in constitutional and international law, qualities the President believes will strengthen INEC’s credibility and operations.

Prior to his confirmation, May Agbamuche-Mbu, a National Commissioner, had been serving as Acting INEC Chairman, overseeing preparatory meetings and administrative duties pending the formal handover.
