The newly created institutions are the Federal University, Okigwe in Imo State; and both the Federal College of Education and the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, located in Bende, Abia State.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio praised the collaborative efforts of lawmakers in both the Senate and the House of Representatives for their continued support of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He acknowledged the contributions of Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu—who sponsored two of the bills—as well as Deputy Whip Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi and Deputy Minority Whip Senator Osita Ngwu for their dedicated representation. Senator Patrick Ndubueze, the lead sponsor of one of the bills, was also commended for his leadership.

Akpabio noted that the institutions aim to offer quality education, encourage research, and address the academic and healthcare needs of the region—ultimately improving health services and enhancing development.

He emphasized that the move marks a milestone in addressing the educational and developmental aspirations of the South-East.
