New Mother Loses Life Due To Forced FGM After Childbirth In Delta StateA young woman named Emeterhire has tragically died in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, after allegedly being forced to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) following complications during childbirth.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to The Nation, Emeterhire, from Aniocha South Local Government Area, had previously fled her village to escape the harmful cultural practice but was reportedly coerced into returning and subjected to the ritual against her will.
Sources from the village revealed that Emeterhire’s mother, Erhuvwun, had also endured FGM in her youth, surviving the ordeal but carrying the physical and emotional scars. In Ogwashi-Uku, FGM is upheld as a sacred rite of passage believed to “purify” young women and prepare them for marriage.
After years of living peacefully in Asaba, where she had built a new life, fallen in love, and was expecting her first child, Emeterhire was urged by her mother to return to the village. Her mother feared that without the village’s traditional blessings, her grandchild would be cursed. Unaware of the danger, Emeterhire returned as her due date approached.
When complications arose during her labor, village elders, who had long resented her for avoiding the ritual, allegedly imposed the FGM procedure she had escaped. As she lay weakened from childbirth, the elders are said to have forced the mutilation upon her during the night. Due to her fragile state, Emeterhire was unable to resist, and the procedure was performed without her consent.
By morning, she succumbed to the trauma of both childbirth and the forced FGM, leaving behind a newborn. Her death has sparked outrage, with human rights activists condemning FGM and demanding justice.
“This tragedy shows how harmful cultural practices continue to claim the lives of women,” said a local advocate, calling for urgent action to protect women and girls from FGM.
Emeterhire’s grieving mother has vowed to fight against FGM to ensure her granddaughter does not suffer the same fate. She hopes her daughter’s death will become a turning point in the battle to eradicate the practice in Ogwashi-Uku.
