Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has emphasized the crucial need to safeguard schools in Nigeria, particularly through the implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative. Her call comes in the wake of the successful rescue of school children from the Kuriga area of Kaduna State.

Governor Uba Sani confirmed the liberation of the 287 Kuriga school children who were recently abducted by bandits in Kaduna State. Okonjo-Iweala expressed her gratitude towards the security forces and government officials involved in securing the children’s release.

In a post on X, she stated, “Wonderful news on the release of the abducted children from Kuriga!! Thanks to the Security forces and all in Govt involved in their release.” However, she stressed the importance of implementing the Safe Schools Initiative to provide better protection for children and to encourage parents to enroll and maintain their children in schools.

Okonjo-Iweala’s remarks underscore the urgency of prioritizing the safety of educational institutions and students in Nigeria, emphasizing the critical role of initiatives like the Safe Schools Initiative in achieving this goal.
