As per reports from Niger state television RTN, military instructors and personnel hailing from Russia’s defense ministry arrived in Niger on Wednesday, signifying a deepening of relations between the West African nation and Moscow, echoing similar developments in its neighboring states under junta rule.

Displayed in a broadcast by RTN on Thursday was footage capturing a military cargo plane unloading equipment, while military personnel observed the proceedings.

The report emphasized that this deployment follows a recent agreement between Niger’s junta and Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed at bolstering cooperation.

A figure clad in camouflage uniform, identified as one of the instructors, expressed, “Our purpose here is to provide training to the Nigerien army and foster military collaboration between Russia and Niger.”

The dispatch of Russian instructors came in the wake of Niger’s decision in mid-March to nullify its military pact with the United States, which allowed Pentagon personnel to operate from two bases, including a drone base constructed at a cost exceeding $100 million.

In response, the Pentagon revealed that U.S. officials had voiced concerns to Niger about its potential alignment with Russia prior to the junta’s termination of the agreement overseeing approximately 1,000 U.S. military personnel in the country.
