The Minister of State for Works, Barr. Mohammed Goronyo, made the remarks in Abuja during a meeting with a high-level delegation from CGGC Global Plc. His comments were highlighted in a statement released Thursday by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mohammed Ahmed.
According to the statement, Goronyo emphasized the ministry’s determination to transform Nigeria’s road network by leveraging advanced engineering practices and technical expertise. He explained that the government seeks Chinese collaboration in training Nigerian engineers, supplying modern road construction and maintenance equipment, and transferring cutting-edge road technologies that can be adapted locally for long-term sustainability.
Goronyo stressed the importance of equipping Nigerian engineers to meet contemporary infrastructure challenges, noting that China’s experience in rapid development makes the partnership invaluable.
During the meeting, CGGC Global Plc’s Vice President, Mr. He Yongjun, expressed the company’s keen interest in supporting Nigeria’s infrastructure growth. While acknowledging CGGC’s capability to contribute, he requested direct access to project opportunities, noting reservations about working exclusively through the Public–Private Partnership framework, which remains the government’s official contract process. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed CGGC’s readiness to collaborate on strategic infrastructure initiatives.
The minister received the Chinese delegation alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Works, including the Director of Human Resource Management, other directors, and technical staff. The Managing Director of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Engr. Dr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi, attended with senior FERMA officials.
The Chinese team was led by He Yongjun and included Mr. Song Yunwu, Security Director; Ms. Tian Yimeng, Director of the Africa Marketing Department; Mr. Peng Changbing, Director of Project Management; and other senior corporate officers.
Goronyo reaffirmed that Nigeria’s engagement with China extends beyond immediate infrastructure needs. He highlighted the long-term objective of building a technically proficient local workforce capable of deploying advanced methodologies independently. He noted that strategic foreign partnerships like this would help Nigeria embed global best practices in road construction and maintenance, ensuring durable and efficient infrastructure for years to come.
