Nigeria Extends Flight Suspension To Niger Republic Amidst Ongoing Concerns

The official directive, known as the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), was conveyed in a letter titled “ECOWAS Restriction on the Republic of Nigeria.” Issued by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) Aeronautical Information Services on February 2, 2024, the letter was signed by Tayo John, the Director of Air Traffic Services, on behalf of the agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive.

As per the ECOWAS resolution, the directive explicitly outlines the suspension of all commercial flights from Niger to Nigeria, vice versa, or any overflight from Niger overflying Nigeria. The restrictions, however, do not apply to overflight aircraft traversing Niger’s airspace, aircraft in emergency situations, and special flights.

Moreover, the directive emphasizes that special flights must obtain authorization from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace, ensuring that necessary permissions are obtained for flights falling under these categories. The renewal of these flight suspensions underscores the regional response to the political developments in Niger Republic and the commitment to upholding ECOWAS resolutions.
