Two Nigerian citizens, a man and a woman, were apprehended for possessing drugs valued at more than R2 million near Upington in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.

According to Sgt Omphile Masegele, the police spokesperson in ZF Mgcawu District, the suspects were arrested on Sunday, May 26, 2024, following intelligence about a suspected drug shipment heading towards Upington.

“The decisive actions of off-duty members of the ZFM High-Way Patrol, Upington Border Police, and Upington K9 unit, who promptly responded to intelligence received regarding a suspected drug shipment en route to Upington on Sunday, May 26, 2024, resulted in the confiscation of a significant quantity of drugs worth over two million rands,” the statement revealed.

The team acted on the information and intercepted a silver Hyundai Sonata sedan on the N10 road outside Upington. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered 9,315 mandrax tablets valued at approximately R930,150, 2.012kg of tik valued at R603,000, and 1.32kg of crack cocaine valued at R554,000 stashed inside.

The officers seized the drugs, the vehicle, an undisclosed sum of cash, and cellphones. The two occupants, aged 42 and 39, Nigerian nationals, were arrested for drug trafficking and are slated to appear in court soon.

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, commended the officers for their diligence in removing drugs from the streets and tightening the grip on drug traffickers.
