Earlier today, Reno Omokri took to his Twitter handle to advise the Federal government to spend a lot in broadcasting, advertising and using big Nigerian stars to entertain guests on the day of the unveiling.

In his words, he said;

“The Nigerian government should pay to broadcast the upcoming commissioning of the 650,000 Barrels Per Day $19 billion Dangote Refinery, at Lekki, Lagos on CNN, Al Jazeera, and any other international news media that accepts paid adverts. Davido, Wizkid, Rema, Tems, Tiwa Savage and others, should be engaged to perform at the event. Professor Wole Soyinka ought to recite a poem on that momentous day. Ali Baba, Basket mouth, AY, and Bovi should be called upon to liven the event with humour. A public holiday ought to be declared, and school children invited to flood the venue with Nigerian flags, and be inspired by the impending industrialisation of Nigeria. It is not too late.”

“Why? Because Nigeria needs a rebranding. And the best form of rebranding is a projection of positive things that are ALREADY happening. Not that will happen. Lai Mohammed has completely failed in this regard. By now, he should be everywhere boasting about the refinery, the way Rwanda is boasting of her upcoming $2 billion airport. Our own is not upcoming. It is here. And we are not celebrating? It is the most important economic development to have happened in Africa in the last ten years. This refinery can and should replace scam in the hearts of the world when they think of Nigeria.”

“If there should be a significant disaster in Nigeria, our TV and radio stations will talk about it for a while week nonstop. On social media, we will follow the news bumper to bumper. It will be the number one trend. An example is this Max Air crash landing. It is everywhere.”

“But now that we have a major breakthrough in Dangote’s $19 billion 650,000 barrel per day refinery, the largest single train refinery on Earth, it barely gets a mention in our media. There is radio silence about it on social media.”

“This is one aspect of our nature we need to change. The average Nigerian, especially Southern Nigerians, takes an almost morbid delight in circulating bad news and suppressing good news. It is in our nature. Look at our journalists. They delight in breaking bad news. They all want to trend on the back of disasters. And we will code for them. We like their drama. If a foreigner listens to a TV station I won’t mention for one hour, he will believe that Sudan is currently better than Nigeria. We have an excessive and insatiable appetite for bad news.”

“Even on social media, you can write that you just passed an exam and will get a few likes. But post that you just suffered an accident and are in the hospital, everybody will crawl out of their shell to comment. Who will cure us of our intense love for bad news?.”
