Ibrahim Dasuki, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, made this known during the 2024 pre-retirement training organized for both retired and prospective retirees from federal parastatals in Kano.

Dasuki emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration, in line with its Renewed Hope Agenda, is focused on improving the post-retirement living standards of public servants to ensure they can sustain themselves after leaving active service. He noted that many retirees are left without meaningful engagement after retirement, which is why the government is prioritizing equipping future retirees with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive.

He stated, “The pre-retirement training program for officers of Federal Parastatals is a core initiative of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR). The purpose of this program is to prepare retiring officers for the challenges ahead and ensure that their quality of life does not diminish. Retirement, as described in various studies, can be a challenging phase. This government initiative is designed to minimize the potential hardships retirees face.”

He further added, “The most important action any employee can take is to prepare for retirement. It marks a significant transition, and failure to plan adequately has resulted in negative experiences for many. Through this program, the government aims to provide crucial knowledge to help retirees manage their lives and effectively use their retirement benefits. The success of previous editions has led to this training being institutionalized and held annually for federal parastatal retirees.”

Dasuki also highlighted the importance of the training materials, saying, “The materials have been compiled into two volumes: a Handbook and a Workbook. The Handbook is designed to serve as a reference guide for participants, both during the training and in the future. We encourage participants to utilize it fully to make informed decisions in their retirement.”

He concluded by noting that “110 agencies have been involved in this program, covering a small portion of the total number of retirees, and we aim to expand it significantly.”

This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable livelihoods for retirees and aligns with the administration’s broader goals under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
