Nigerian Government Yet To Announce Start Date For N77,000 Allowance Boost For NYSC MembersThe National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that it cannot provide a timeline for the implementation of the newly approved N77,000 monthly allowance for corps members. A press statement released in September by the agency’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, indicated that the monthly allowance had been increased from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July 2024, in accordance with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

Despite this approval, reports from SaharaReporters reveal that the administration of President Bola Tinubu paid corps members the old monthly allowance of N33,000 for September. A corps member stated, “They have not paid, but those around me who received payment got N33,000 instead of the promised N77,000.”

In a phone conversation with SaharaReporters, NYSC Public Relations Officer Caroline Embu explained that the delay in implementing the increased allowance is due to government processes. “It is a process. Everything is a process. After making the pronouncement, the government has to work on it to facilitate payment. It’s not automatic,” she said.

Embu further noted that similar delays have occurred with the implementation of the minimum wage, stating, “I can’t confirm if the implementation will happen this month (October). This is because the Federal Government is responsible for payments, not the NYSC. We don’t know when it will be implemented; we are all waiting for the minimum wage as well.”
