In his speech, themed “Courage, Perseverance, Self-Reliance,” the monarch urged citizens to endure the current challenges. He noted a significant decline in well-being over the past year, referencing the national protest in August 2024 under the hashtag #EndBadGovernance. His key concerns revolved around the economy and security.
Achebe detailed the consequences of these issues, including rising living costs, widespread business closures, increasing unemployment, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness among citizens. He criticized the government’s policies, pointing out that despite Tinubu’s confidence in his strategies, petrol prices have surged and the naira has depreciated significantly.
He called for the President to seek alternative solutions and organize a non-partisan national summit focused on economic and security collaboration to address the country’s urgent challenges.
Additionally, Achebe condemned the violence and property damage caused by unknown assailants in the South-East, stressing the lack of effective governmental response. He noted the ongoing threats from these groups, which disrupt daily life, including school and market closures on Mondays, inflicting severe economic and social consequences on the Ndigbo community. He also raised concerns about insufficient funding for local vigilante groups, which he believes are essential for enhancing security in the region.
