Scheduled to launch on February 7, 2025, the initiative aims to simplify the passport renewal process for Nigerians living abroad.
Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, made the announcement on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, during her visit to the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, at the commission’s Abuja headquarters.
Nandap explained that the new service will allow Nigerians in the Diaspora to apply for and renew their passports online, directly from their homes. This digital solution is designed to save time, reduce travel expenses, and increase efficiency for Nigerians living abroad.
However, she clarified that the service will only be available for passport renewals and not for first-time applicants or minors.
The NIS Chief emphasized that Nigerians overseas can begin their passport renewal process up to a year before expiration, ensuring a smooth and timely process.
She also acknowledged NiDCOM’s vital role in raising awareness of NIS programs and policies that benefit the diaspora community.
According to Nandap, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immigration service to prioritize ease of living for Nigerians abroad.
Additionally, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has approved the establishment of a new passport processing facility in New York to address existing backlogs, with plans to open more offices in other U.S. cities and countries.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa praised the initiative, stating that it aligns with NiDCOM’s mission to enhance diaspora engagement and improve service delivery.
“The launch of the contactless passport application solution in Europe is a major step forward in providing efficient, secure, and convenient passport services to Nigerians abroad. NiDCOM will continue to support, monitor, and collaborate with NIS to ensure the success of this initiative,” said the NiDCOM Chairman.
