The Nigerian national newspapers have highlighted a number of major political and economic developments in their Tuesday, September 1, 2026 editions, with the alleged fraud case involving former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva and the slow progress of the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas initiative among the prominent stories.

The PUNCH reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has called on Sylva to present himself for questioning over an alleged $14.86 million fraud case after declaring him wanted.

The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, reportedly made the appeal on Monday while responding to allegations by the former governor that the anti-corruption agency had become more aligned with the All Progressives Congress than with its role as a government institution.

Meanwhile, The Guardian focuses on the Federal Government’s CNG conversion programme, noting that the initiative remains significantly behind its target of converting one million vehicles to compressed natural gas.

According to the report, the programme has achieved only about 12 per cent penetration nearly three years after its launch, raising concerns about its ability to reduce dependence on petrol and ease transportation costs for Nigerians.

The newspaper further reported that the slow adoption of CNG has contributed to the financial pressure facing Nigerians following the removal of the petrol subsidy, with the burden estimated at N58.6 trillion.

The development has renewed questions about the effectiveness of the CNG initiative and whether it can achieve the government’s intended objectives within the remaining period of its target.
