Nigerian Police Under Fire From HURIWA For Alleged Partisan Interference In PDP Affairs
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticized the Nigerian Police for their handling of the leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at both national and state levels.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, on Friday, the Association accused the security agents of acting as tools to destabilize the opposition.
HURIWA highlighted two instances of police complicity, emphasizing the decline in professionalism within the force.
It pointed out the illegal occupation of the PDP National Secretariat by former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, who was validly removed by the Court of Appeal, which the police have failed to enforce. Despite this judicial decision, Anyanwu has continued to occupy the office, allegedly with backing from influential figures, while the police have not taken any action.
Additionally, HURIWA cited the police’s role in barricading the Rivers PDP secretariat following a High Court judgment that dissolved the Nyesom Wike-led faction of the party leadership. This move has prevented Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was declared the rightful party leader, from reorganizing the party, leaving a leadership vacuum.
The statement read in part, “The police have demonstrated blatant double standards by failing to uphold the law uniformly. They turned a blind eye to Anyanwu’s continued occupation of the PDP National Secretariat despite a valid court judgment removing him. Meanwhile, they obstruct the implementation of a Rivers State High Court ruling that dissolved Wike’s faction of the PDP.”
“This selective enforcement of justice undermines the integrity of the police and casts doubt on their neutrality.”
