In response to allegations that the Lagos State Government targeted Igbos in the recent demolition of houses in Amuwo Odofin, Reno Omokri strongly refuted such claims. He argued that it is ungrateful to accuse the Lagos State Government of demolishing houses based on ethnicity, especially considering the history of Igbos employed in the Lagos State Civil Service Commission. Omokri pointed out that thousands of Igbos are employed by the Lagos State Government and questioned whether any of them had been sacked due to their ethnicity. He drew attention to a recent incident in the Southeast, where some Igbo states reportedly sacked fellow Igbos as civil servants based on their origin, a situation he contrasts with Lagos.
To illustrate his point, Omokri shared a letter from the Anambra State government calling for job applications and explicitly stating that only Anambra indigenes should apply. He questioned whether such a scenario had ever occurred in Lagos and emphasized how easy it would be for the Lagos State Government to adopt a similar approach if it wished.
In highlighting the inclusivity of Lagos, Omokri noted that over 50 Igbos hold elected or appointed positions as Commissioners, Representatives, Assembly members, and LGA Chairmen in Lagos. He raised the question of reciprocal diversity in the Southeast, emphasizing the disparity in the Southeast where individuals from Lagos, the Southwest, or the North are rarely elected or appointed into government or civil service roles. Concluding his statement, Omokri expressed disappointment at the false accusations and urged against attributing the house demolitions in Lagos to ethnicity. He emphasized the positive relationship between Igbos and Lagos, highlighting the need to avoid unfounded claims that could undermine this relationship.
Anonymous commented on Lindaikeji’s page, stating: “I curse you Reno and the Igbo hatred in you will make you die of heart attack one day. Keep spewing rubbish and stoking ethnic division.”
Elems: “This dude is trying so hard to make himself relevant by using ethnic tribalism.”
Chibuzor: “Ungrateful you say?? People that claim to have DEVELOPED Lagos and as such are entitled to work , be elected and build wherever they want. In fact Lagos should get an Igbo governor… that will appoint Yorubas.”
Zanda: “Ndigbo now have a siege mentality and see the actions of other people through ethnic prism. Demolition of illegal structures also happens in the Southeast and there is no uproar. There is no part of Lagos that is designated for any tribe exclusively. Demolitions affact péople from every tribe but it is only the Igbos that claim to be victimised.”
