Nigerians In Excitement As China Commits To Refinancing, Completing Abuja-Kano, Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri Railways, Others

In an encouraging sign for Nigeria’s infrastructure development, China has committed to refinancing and completing key railway projects, including the Abuja-Kano and Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri routes, marking a significant highlight of the ongoing Belt and Road Initiative Forum (BRI) in Beijing.

During the bilateral meeting held in Beijing, President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, addressed requests presented by Nigeria’s representative, Vice President Kashim Shettima. The response marked a significant leap towards realising these infrastructural dreams, ones that had previously been held back due to budget constraints and other commitments.

Historically, China had pledged to finance 85% of the costs for these railway projects, with Nigeria accounting for the remaining 15%. Nigeria had met its end of the bargain, funding its share since the inception of the projects.

Highlighting the importance of these projects, the Vice President stated that the railway initiatives are integral to boosting the nation’s economic activities, creating job opportunities, and enhancing trade and investment. He further commented on the half-century relationship between Nigeria and China, lauding the respect, dignity, and mutual international cooperations that have underscored their interactions.

Expressing his appreciation for Nigeria’s unwavering support, especially in the context of the one China Policy, President Jinping affirmed China’s commitment to expanding its investments in Nigeria, particularly in power generation and the digital economy. He also emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals working in Nigeria.

A significant aspect of the discussion focused on digital transformation. Vice President Shettima, during his keynote address at the Forum, emphasized Nigeria’s intentions to capitalize on its ties with China to enhance its digital landscape. Detailing Nigeria’s efforts, Sen. Shettima touched upon milestones achieved in public service digitization, e-payment systems, and electoral reforms.

In the broader scope of the BRI Forum, Vice President Shettima’s comments provided a snapshot of Nigeria’s ambitions. Harnessing the digital economy as a catalyst for growth, the country aims to evolve as a global technical talent hub, aiming to train three million technical talents in the upcoming years.

These advancements in the digital realm are bolstered by Nigeria’s strategic blueprint, which targets three key objectives: enhancing global prominence as a technical talent hub, deepening its position in global tech research, and raising the nation’s digital literacy levels.

The bilateral meeting, set against the backdrop of a global gathering, highlighted the multi-dimensional nature of the Nigeria-China partnership. Beyond infrastructural commitments, the ties encompass economic, technological, and strategic cooperation, promising a mutually beneficial future for both nations.
