According to reports from Channels TV, the agency conducted a surprise raid on the market, unveiling workshops engaged in the replication of products from various established brands. A video shared online depicted cartons filled with fake wines and carbonated beverages, manufactured by these criminals and awaiting distribution to unsuspecting consumers. Alarmingly, the seized products displayed counterfeit NAFDAC numbers, further highlighting the extent of the illegal operations.
During the operation, NAFDAC’s Director for the South East zone, Martins Iluyomade, emphasized the gravity of the situation, declaring an immediate closure of the market. He revealed that every shop within the market essentially functioned as a factory, contributing to two distinct forms of illegality. Some individuals were found to be mass-producing products belonging to established brands, creating a situation where consumers might unwittingly purchase substandard goods. Moreover, the manufacturing process itself was conducted in unsanitary conditions, employing questionable chemicals and colorings.
Iluyomade expressed concern about the potential health risks associated with the consumption of these illicit products, especially during the festive season. He highlighted the dangers of purchasing drinks of unknown origin and quality, emphasizing the increased prevalence of renal and kidney failures linked to such unregulated goods.
As a result of the discovery, the market has been temporarily shut down, signaling NAFDAC’s commitment to curbing the production and distribution of counterfeit and unsafe products within the region. The enforcement agency’s actions underscore the critical need for heightened vigilance and regulatory measures to safeguard public health and ensure the integrity of consumer goods in the market
