In a recent development, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has directed pointed criticism towards President Bola Tinubu, urging him to make all his journeys public, considering his status as a national asset. The call for transparency comes on the heels of the presidency’s announcement on Wednesday that President Tinubu would be undertaking a private visit to France. Obi, in response, asserted that unveiling the details of such trips is a crucial step in reducing the overall cost of governance.
Taking to social media to express his views, Obi posted, “I have been wondering what is private for a sitting President who is not on vacation to embark on a publicly funded ‘private’ visit. May I humbly remind the President that he is now a public national asset.”
The former presidential candidate emphasized that, as a national asset, President Tinubu’s movements should be made public and be treated as matters of public interest. Obi suggested that even when the president requires a genuinely private visit, such as for a holiday or family gathering, he should explicitly state so. However, private visits, especially those funded by the public, should be financed by the president himself.
Obi argued that such a measure is integral to the nation’s cost-cutting efforts, emphasizing the urgent need for savings to address various issues that demand attention, including the maintenance of smaller public assets.
The challenge posed by Peter Obi underscores the ongoing discourse around transparency, accountability, and responsible use of public resources, resonating with the wider public sentiment for a more frugal and efficient governance system. As the debate unfolds, it remains to be seen how President Tinubu and other political figures respond to this call for greater openness in their official movements.
