Speaking during a recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Umahi explained that underwater structural damage has made intervention inevitable.
He also announced that the council approved ₦493 billion for two major projects — ₦359 billion for the reconstruction of Lagos’ Carter Bridge, and ₦134 billion for the upgrade of the 152 km Kano–Katsina Road. The 11.8-kilometre Carter Bridge was declared beyond repair due to severe structural defects, while the Kano–Katsina Road’s cost increased due to economic conditions.
Last week, the Federal Government ordered a ban on heavy-duty vehicles using the Third Mainland Bridge. “Alongside other urgent works in Lagos, we are deeply engaged in discussions about the future of both the Third Mainland Bridge and the Carter Bridge,” Umahi said.
Earlier this year, the government had put the rehabilitation costs for the Third Mainland and Carter bridges at ₦21 billion and ₦25 billion respectively.
