Following the hike in petrol costs by Dangote Petroleum Refinery and various depot owners, the pump prices have surged to between ₦1,050 and ₦1,150 per litre.
In response to this development, Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, told Punch that in more progressive societies, representatives of workers, the organized private sector, and students would have been consulted before implementing such a decision.
He highlighted that in an inclusive government, decisions affecting the public should not be made unilaterally by a single individual. Ndubuaku lamented the labeling of critics as members of the Obidient Movement and the use of attack dogs to silence dissent.
He stated, “This pump price hike will not only impact food prices and transportation costs but will exacerbate inflation and devalue the naira. What we are witnessing is a scenario we term Tinubunomics—a concept yet to be tested.
“Even countries like China subsidize goods. You refuse to subsidize fuel and show little interest in promoting CNG buses. How long does it take to initiate such initiatives?”
Ndubuaku also emphasized the need for President Bola Tinubu to adopt a more inclusive approach similar to former leaders like Olusegun Obasanjo. He recalled Obasanjo’s practice of convening monthly roundtables with stakeholders to discuss workers’ welfare and other sensitive national issues.
“We’re not opposed to your actions, but include people in the decision-making process. Let us understand your plans so that citizens can prepare,” Ndubuaku added.
