Oluwagbemi Michael, Programme Director and CEO of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), revealed these details to The PUNCH during an event in Ogun State. He noted that NNPC has successfully launched 12 CNG centers in the past year, including six in Abuja and six in Lagos.

Michael’s remarks addressed growing public concerns about the limited number of CNG stations, which has hindered the adoption of CNG as a viable alternative to petrol. He highlighted the government’s ongoing infrastructure development efforts, including collaboration with the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund. Recently, approximately N122 billion was allocated to six private companies involved in the CNG distribution network.

“NNPC has installed 12 new stations in the last six months and acquired equipment for an additional 40 sites nationwide,” he stated. He emphasized that while infrastructure development takes time, the process is actively progressing.

Moreover, private companies such as Bovas and NIPCO are also investing in the sector, contributing to the expansion of CNG facilities. Michael expressed optimism that the current count of around 50 refueling stations would double in the coming months due to ongoing engagement with investors.

In a bid to boost CNG demand, the Federal Government is distributing one million CNG conversion kits to commercial drivers, which is expected to create an additional 1.5 million CNG demands across the nation.

Michael confirmed that existing filling stations could be upgraded to accommodate CNG refueling. He also mentioned a credit scheme that allows vehicle owners to convert their petrol-powered cars to CNG, easing the financial burden.

“This initiative will not only promote CNG adoption but also ensure that infrastructure development keeps pace with growing demand,” he added, reassuring the public that efforts are underway to make CNG widely accessible and affordable throughout Nigeria.
