This suggestion was put forth during a meeting with the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC) at his Abuja residence on Monday, where Atiku expressed concerns about Nigeria potentially becoming a one-party state.

In response to Atiku’s proposal, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Yakubu Shendam, characterized Atiku’s call as reactive and a belated solution.

Shendam stated that the party would only consider a merger if Atiku supported the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, for the presidency.

Shendam emphasized that any potential collaboration should be strategic and not driven by emotional considerations.

He conveyed that the NNPP would be open to the proposal if Atiku endorsed Kwankwaso to lead the effort in unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

He remarked, “This is akin to seeking a remedy after the fact. If there is to be future collaboration, it should be based on a strategic approach.

We are moving forward confidently because we have a formidable contender with the capability to lead Nigeria.”

Shendam clarified that while they are open to the involvement of figures like Atiku, any merger consideration would be most favorable with the NNPP, given Atiku’s impending retirement, suggesting his support for Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
