No Retreat, No Surrender – Ajaero Pledges Continued Advocacy After Police Visit

Ajaero declared his readiness to sacrifice his life for the labour movement if necessary, highlighting that the movement remains the most patriotic and largest pan-Nigerian organization in the country.

Addressing NLC members and affiliated unions gathered at the Labour House in Abuja on Thursday, following his police interrogation over alleged terrorism charges, Ajaero stressed that he is no stranger to the intimidation tactics often used against labour unions by authorities.

“The labour movement is worth dying for because of its patriotism and commitment. It stands as one of the largest pan-Nigerian organizations. Our patriotism, dating back to the colonial era and through the military regimes, remains unshakable,” Ajaero stated.

He continued, “We are more patriotic than any other organization in this country, and we will continue to uphold this. I have gone there [to the police], and I am back. As a citizen, I can confirm that this is part of the hazards of the job. It is expected. For those who reached out to me, I assured them that this is part of the job’s hazards. Even at the unit level, many of us face such challenges.”

Ajaero expressed disappointment that both federal and state governments have yet to begin implementing the ₦70,000 minimum wage. He announced that the next phase of the labour movement’s struggle would focus on compelling the government to implement the new minimum wage for workers.

“Regardless of the circumstances, we are determined to continue the struggle. We have secured the minimum wage, but it has not been implemented. We must push for its immediate implementation,” Ajaero said.

He concluded by reiterating the NLC’s unwavering commitment to ensuring better welfare for Nigerian workers. “Anything that will improve the welfare of Nigerian workers, we will be involved in it. We will not be distracted. On behalf of the NLC, I want to thank everyone for the solidarity shown here today,” Ajaero told the crowd of supporters.
