In a statement by its National Chairman, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, PANDEF applauded President Tinubu for signing the South-South Development Commission Bill into law and commended the National Assembly for expediting the legislative process.
“This landmark decision has strengthened our people’s confidence in the Federal Government’s commitment to balanced regional development,” the statement read. “It also reaffirms efforts to tackle the pressing social, environmental, and developmental issues facing the South-South.”
While celebrating the commission’s creation, PANDEF stressed that its effectiveness hinges on appointing competent and credible individuals. The group urged President Tinubu to prioritize merit and experience in his selections, ensuring the commission complements state governments’ efforts in advancing the Niger Delta’s growth.
Additionally, PANDEF emphasized the urgent need for government intervention in addressing environmental degradation and infrastructure deficiencies plaguing the oil-rich region. The forum reiterated its call for broader federal initiatives to support environmental restoration and economic development.
Beyond the commission’s leadership, PANDEF also urged President Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. The group called for the immediate reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State Assembly, citing widespread national concern over their suspension.
Expressing its appreciation once again, PANDEF stated: “We thank President Tinubu and the National Assembly for this significant milestone. We remain hopeful that this commission, alongside other necessary interventions, will usher in a new era of progress, peace, and stability in the South-South region.”
