In a statement released on Wednesday, these leaders outlined seven key demands for the administration of President Bola Tinubu. They criticized the Nigerian government for its failure to address severe issues such as insecurity, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, disease, and the high cost of living, all attributed to corruption and poor governance.

The statement highlighted that the fundamental role of any government is to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens. It argued that a regime failing to fulfill these basic responsibilities loses its moral and legal legitimacy. The statement criticized successive governments for failing to provide effective leadership, leading to widespread disillusionment and frustration among Nigerians, particularly the youth.

The elders endorsed the youths’ right to protest and urged the federal government to engage directly with the protesters to address their concerns, rather than relying on intermediaries or using force. They proposed several steps for the government to take:

1. **Engage in Dialogue**: Directly interact with youth leaders to understand and address their grievances.
2. **Implement Reforms**: Address protester demands through meaningful reforms, showing commitment to change.
3. **Support Youth Empowerment**: Invest in programs for youth development, education, and entrepreneurship.
4. **Enhance Economic Development**: Implement policies to boost the country’s economic growth.
5. **Improve Governance**: Increase transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in governance.
6. **Ensure Security**: Allow peaceful assembly and protect protesters from harm.
7. **Lead by Example**: Government leaders should exemplify integrity and transparency to rebuild trust.

The elders expressed solidarity with the youths and emphasized the importance of peaceful and lawful protests. They also encouraged dialogue if the government reaches out to address the root causes of the discontent.

By adopting these measures, they believe the government can resolve the underlying issues, mitigate tensions, and create a more stable and prosperous future for Nigeria.
