A significant turnout greeted Hamisu Wadume upon his return to his hometown of Ibbi in Taraba State on Sunday, April 7, 2024. Wadume, who had been apprehended by the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector-General of Police in 2019, was released from Kuje Prison in Abuja on Friday, April 5, 2024, having completed his concurrent jail term, as confirmed by prison sources to Daily Trust.
Honourable Prince Ayuba Zaku Dampar, representing Ibi-Wukari Federal Constituency, played a role in facilitating Wadume’s release. Daily Trust reports that Wadume was transported to Ibbi via the Benue River, where he received a warm reception from thousands of locals. Both the elderly and the youth eagerly gathered to welcome him as he made his way through town before retiring to his residence.
Expressing the community’s jubilation, a resident named Nuhu stated, “We are in a festive mood as Wadume regains his freedom and returns to his hometown, Ibbi.”
During his visit, Wadume paid respects to the Chief of Ibbi chiefdom, Alhaji Salihu Danbawuro, at his palace, expressing gratitude for the chief and his subjects’ unwavering support throughout his trial and imprisonment. Chief Danbawuro reciprocated the sentiment, expressing happiness at Wadume’s return to Ibbi.
The events surrounding Wadume’s arrest in 2019 were marked by controversy, with the IRT team encountering resistance from soldiers during their transport of Wadume to Abuja. The soldiers, led by Tijjani Balarabe from Battalion 93 on the Ibbi-Takum road, freed Wadume and allegedly perpetrated violence against the arresting officers, resulting in casualties and injuries.
In his testimony to the joint investigation panel, Balarabe admitted to using a spoon to unlock Wadume’s handcuffs and detailed the events leading to Wadume’s disappearance after being temporarily held by the military.
Despite being illegally freed for a period, Wadume was eventually rearrested in Kano and subsequently sentenced to seven years in prison by a Federal High Court in Abuja. While convicted on certain charges, including escaping from lawful custody and unlawful dealings in firearms, the court found the prosecution’s evidence regarding kidnapping insufficient.
Wadume’s conviction also led to the imprisonment of several co-defendants, including a police officer and a police inspector, as pronounced by Judge Binta Nyako in her ruling.
