Sani Zubairu, President of the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), confirmed on Tuesday that referees are already undergoing training to familiarize themselves with the new equipment, which will be used throughout the season for all 380 NPFL matches, including those in the Federation Cup.
“This will greatly enhance the performance of our referees, as having access to advanced gadgets improves their effectiveness compared to those without,” Zubairu told PUNCH Sports Extra. He also indicated that more high-performance gadgets are expected to be introduced in the future.
The referees’ training is being conducted in batches in Abuja. Additionally, referees will see increased match indemnities for the second time this year, reflecting the NPFL’s commitment to their welfare.
The earnings of referees are influenced by the distance they travel to match venues, with the total cost for match officials amounting to approximately N10 million per match day. The minimum earnings for a referee are between N150,000 and N200,000 per match, covering transport and feeding. Accommodation is provided 48 hours before their arrival, with expenses paid directly to hotels and allowances given in cash.
The payment structure remains unchanged despite the recent increment, reflecting ongoing improvements in the support for match officials.
