The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) is gearing up to launch night operations before the second quarter of 2024, according to a recent statement by NRC Managing Director, Fidet Okhiria. Okhiria highlighted that the current limitation of train operations to daytime is not in line with the intended round-the-clock functionality of trains. Despite the potential demand for evening travel, security concerns have restricted operations to daylight hours due to the prevailing situation in the country.
The NRC has ambitious plans to reintroduce both passenger and freight trains on routes such as Port-Harcourt to Aba, Lagos to Kano, and Kaduna, particularly due to the presence of dry ports in these areas. The corporation aims to enhance train frequency by increasing trips to six on major routes, including Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe, and Abuja-Kaduna. This plan involves three trips to and three trips from each destination, totaling six trips in a day.
As of now, the NRC is running four trips—two up and two down—across various routes. The targeted commencement date for the expanded train services is set to be before the second quarter of 2024, offering improved connectivity and transportation options for passengers and cargo.
