The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has captured seven individuals suspected of engaging in the illicit production of rifles and pistols within the Abuja metropolitan area.

As per a statement issued on Wednesday by NSCDC’s National Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, the illegal activity was thwarted thanks to a tip-off.

Afolabi highlighted that the NSCDC’s Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation promptly acted upon the information and successfully apprehended the suspects.

“On receiving intelligence that a group of individuals were involved in the manufacture of semi-automatic rifles and pistols around the Moshood Abiola National Stadium area in Abuja, the DII-SM acted swiftly based on credible information, resulting in the arrest of the 7 suspects,” Daily Trust quoted the NSCDC spokesperson as saying.

“Based on the confessional statements provided by the suspects, we have learned that Amos Iyawo is the ringleader of the group, having recruited others to participate in the manufacturing of the rifles,” the statement elaborated.

Investigations by the security agency revealed that the rifles and pistols had just been produced and none had been sold yet.

It is noted that the suspects were found in possession of five completed rifles, one pistol, one unfinished rifle, seven empty cartridges, two boots, rods, a welding machine, a filling machine, two searchlights, three pliers, a shovel, cutlass, axes, a hunter’s ID card, and a belt.
