Oba Of Benin Praises Okpebholo For Restoring Community Rights And EmpowermentThe Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has expressed his gratitude to Governor Monday Okpebholo for restoring his full statutory rights, calling the decision a significant blow to those who sought to undermine the Benin monarchy. In a letter of appreciation dated November 27, 2024, the Oba also commended the governor for abolishing the parallel traditional councils established in the Edo South senatorial district under the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Oba further conveyed his belief that Governor Okpebholo’s leadership was divinely ordained to bring stability and progress to Edo State, offering prayers for the governor’s continued strength and wisdom.

The letter, which was co-signed by senior Palace Chiefs including Norense Ozigbo-Esere (Osuma of Benin), Edionwe Oliha (Oliha of Benin), Stanley Obamwonyi (Esere of Benin), and Osaro Idah (Obazelu of Benin), also thanked the governor for taking swift action on several important matters. These included reversing the controversial withdrawal of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre’s concession, an issue that had been a point of contention during the previous administration.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Oba, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, made the statement public, emphasizing the palace’s deep appreciation for Governor Okpebholo’s efforts in restoring the Oba’s rights and reaffirming his role as the sole traditional ruler of the Benin Kingdom and its cultural custodian.

The letter read in part: “We deeply thank Your Excellency for restoring the full statutory rights of the Oba of Benin, for respecting the rights and privileges of the Omo N’Oba as the sole traditional ruler of Benin Kingdom and custodian of its rich cultural heritage. This action, so early in your administration, has been widely applauded. It is a setback to our detractors, a source of joy to our allies, and a marvel in the eyes of Almighty God.”

The restoration comes after a period of tension during the previous administration, which had stripped the Oba of his statutory rights and created rival traditional councils across the local government areas of Edo South. These actions, along with accusations of insubordination by some Benin Dukes (Enigie), had created a rift between the state government and the monarchy.
