Gowon Explains Why He Chose Not To Join Any Political Party In NigeriaFormer Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), has explained why he chose not to align with any political party in Nigeria, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to the nation above all else.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The 90-year-old elder statesman shared his perspective on Wednesday, November 27, during a meeting in Abuja with the League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau.
Gowon explained that his primary allegiance has always been to Nigeria, and his military background has shaped his belief in serving the country without political affiliation. “I’ve always believed in taking the best from all ideologies—be it socialism, capitalism, or others—and applying them for the greater good,” he said.
He recalled that during his time in government, while diverse perspectives were encouraged, decisions were always made with the best interests of the nation at heart.
On the issue of regional politics, Gowon highlighted the sacrifices made by the North to address concerns over regional domination, especially in light of the North’s large size and population. He pointed out that his leadership was informed by extensive discussions with political leaders, traditional rulers, and various groups. This dialogue, he said, helped to ease tensions and prevent the fracturing of the nation.
Gowon noted the significant anxiety in the South about Northern dominance, which led to calls for secession from various regions, including the West, East, and even the North. “If we had allowed that to happen, we could have ended up with separate nations—whether Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, or otherwise. I hesitate to say more, as it might offend someone here,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the current challenges facing the North, Gowon expressed sorrow over the rise of groups like the Lukurawa from Mali, whose actions he believes have only compounded the region’s difficulties.
Gowon, who served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1966 to 1975 before being overthrown, reiterated that his commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria has always superseded any political party affiliation.
