Obasa Breaks Silence: Reveals Truth About Lagos Assembly Crisis, APC Rift, And His Political Future

Ousted Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has defended his decision to preside over a plenary session attended by only four lawmakers, insisting that attendance is voluntary and cannot be enforced.

In an interview with TVC, Obasa dismissed concerns over the legitimacy of the session, stating, “I can’t force people to attend plenary. If they say only four lawmakers were present, the key point is that the session was held.”

Despite the Lagos Assembly comprising 40 lawmakers, most members were absent from the controversial session, though they were reportedly within the complex. However, Obasa reaffirmed his position, asserting, “I remain the Speaker of the Lagos Assembly. When I was elected, all my colleagues supported me.”

Questioning Mojisola Meranda’s emergence as Speaker, he challenged the process, asking, “Was she elected by breaking into the chambers?”

Calls for Constitutional Compliance in Leadership Changes

Obasa stressed that any attempt to remove him must strictly follow constitutional procedures.

“I believe in the rule of law. I’m not against removal—what they call impeachment—but it must be done in accordance with the constitution,” he emphasized.

Denies APC Crisis in Lagos

Downplaying rumors of division within the Lagos APC, Obasa insisted that the party remains united.

“APC in Lagos is one family under the leadership of Cornelius Ojelabi and our respected leaders in the GAC,” he stated.

Dismisses 2027 Governorship Speculations

Addressing claims that the Assembly crisis is linked to the 2027 governorship race, Obasa dismissed the speculation, commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s performance.

“This has nothing to do with governorship ambition. Sanwo-Olu is performing well, and no reasonable person should be thinking of governorship now. He still has two years in office,” he added.
