Obasanjo made this revelation during a drama presentation titled “Aremu Omo Asabi,” held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to mark the 66th anniversary of his mother, Mrs. Benice Obasanjo’s death.

In a statement released by his Media Assistant, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo expressed sorrow that his mother did not live to see his achievements and enjoy the benefits of her sacrifices. He shared that out of his mother’s nine children, only he and his sister survived, and he was the only one who received formal education due to his father’s belief that educating a female child was unnecessary.

Obasanjo said, “I was told I was in my mother’s womb for 12 months, and since birth, I have not been left alone. Among nine children, only my sister and I survived. I was the only one educated because my father believed that a female child’s education was pointless.”

The former president also showed his support for the drama troupe’s attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the longest open drama performance.

At the event, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, represented by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, highlighted the vital role of mothers in society. He praised Mrs. Benice Obasanjo’s enduring legacy through her children, especially Obasanjo, who continues to be a prominent figure in Nigerian history.

Governor Abiodun remarked, “Mothers are the bedrock of any society. The musical drama ‘Aremu Omo Asabi’ not only recounts history but also reminds us of the sacrifices mothers make and the lasting impact they have on their children.”

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government Mrs. Salu Hundeyin, also commended Obasanjo for honoring his late mother 66 years after her passing. He underscored the special role of mothers as cherished figures deserving of respect and honor.
