At the time of his impeachment, Obasa was reportedly in Atlanta, Georgia, attending a legal conference. Property records reviewed by Peoples Gazette revealed that the former Speaker owns a suburban property in Lawrenceville, Georgia, purchased in May 2019 for $424,742. The residence, which was upgraded from four to seven bedrooms, is now valued at $654,602.

In 2024, Obasa paid $40,000 in property taxes on the property, a figure significantly higher than his official earnings as Speaker. Anti-corruption advocate Eric Okonkwo commented on the situation, stating, “No public official in Nigeria earns enough to afford such luxury, especially not one who claims to be transparent.”

The impeachment was supported by 32 out of 40 Assembly members. The motion for Obasa’s removal was introduced by Femi Saheed (Kosofe II) and seconded by Aro Moshood Abiodun (Ikorodu II). Following the decision, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda (Apapa I) was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first woman to hold the position in Lagos State.

Obasa has consistently denied all allegations of misconduct, asserting that his wealth was acquired legitimately. However, critics have continued to raise concerns about his financial transparency.
