Abuja: Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stop underplaying the hardships faced by citizens, dismissing the notion that these challenges are not unique to Nigeria alone.
Obi emphasized that instead of confronting the reality of Nigeria being the poverty capital of the world and one of the most insecure nations, decisive actions should be taken to alleviate these issues. He criticized the government for adopting an ostrich-like approach while the people continue to suffer.
The former Anambra State Governor expressed his concerns in a series of tweets, stating, “The challenges confronting Nigeria are widely recognized. We lead globally in poverty, insecurity, hunger, poor education, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, income disparity, corruption perception, inadequate infrastructure, and healthcare challenges.”
He added, “It’s disheartening to hear leaders, entrusted with addressing these problems, suggesting ‘we are not alone in poverty and hunger.’ Instead of just acknowledging global similarities, we need a robust action plan tailored to our unique challenges. Concrete solutions and a clear vision are needed, not comparisons that minimize our plight.”
Obi urged leaders to offer practical solutions rather than reminders of shared global challenges. He emphasized the importance of visionary leadership that provides direction, solutions, and reassurance during crises, highlighting that effective leaders do not just state problems but offer strategies to overcome them.
“Like a skilled pilot during turbulence, leaders must reassure citizens of their commitment to ensuring a safe journey towards a brighter future for all Nigerians,” Obi concluded.
