Obono-Obla also discussed his efforts to recover $7 billion from a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) bailout before his removal from office.

Reflecting on the cases he investigated, Obono-Obla said, “While I cannot specify all the cases that led to my difficulties, several notable ones include the attempt to recover the $7 billion CBN bailout, the investigation into an oil company’s failure to pay $1.9 billion for an oil block it purchased for $2.5 billion in 2014, and the discovery of 80 armored Mercedes Benz S-Class vehicles at the residence of an Abuja-based federal director.

“Other significant investigations included examining directors of the defunct Petroleum Equalization Fund who had amassed over $5 billion and numerous foreign properties; a $12.5 million contract awarded by the Nigerian Ports Authority to a company owned by a former senator and current governor for dredging the Calabar port channel, which was never executed; and oil companies that failed to remit over $3 billion in royalties to the federal government.

“I also looked into the purchase of a house in Asokoro, Abuja, by a serving federal permanent secretary in the name of her 8-year-old son; the offshore assets of some National Assembly members; the failure of commercial banks to remit over N38 trillion collected as stamp duties by 2019; and the illegal takeover of a building belonging to the National Board for Technical Education in Maitama, Abuja, by a billionaire from Katsina State, among other issues.”
