During the visit, Governor Abiodun highlighted the road’s critical importance, as it serves as a vital connection from Lagos through Ogun State to the South-East and South-South regions. He acknowledged the significant inconvenience it has caused daily commuters.

The governor pointed out that although previous administrations had awarded contracts for the road’s reconstruction, progress was only made from the Benin side towards Ijebu-Ode, leaving the work incomplete due to funding issues. The project stalled at the outskirts of Ijebu-Ode, resulting in a deteriorating Sagamu Interchange.

“This is a federal road, and it is arguably the most crucial road for Southern Nigeria, facilitating the movement of goods and people from Lagos to Ogun State and further to the South-East and South-South regions. It is a major arterial route,” he stated.

Governor Abiodun explained, “The reconstruction was awarded several years ago by previous governments, but sadly, it commenced from the Benin end, and insufficient funding prevented it from reaching the Sagamu Interchange. As a result, we are witnessing the suffering of our citizens. For the past few days, this road has been completely impassable due to a blocked drainage system underneath, which was designed to channel water from a canal and has exacerbated the situation.”

In response to the issue, officials from the State Ministries of Works and Environment are currently developing an alternative drainage system to redirect water away from the road. Temporary measures using hardcore materials have been implemented to make the damaged section passable again.

Additionally, Governor Abiodun informed that he has communicated the situation to the Minister of Works, who assured him that plans are in motion to either award a new contract or carry out temporary repairs. He has also brought the matter to the attention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing the urgent need for federal intervention.

“Last Thursday, I discussed the state of this road with Mr. President. For clarity, let it be known that Ogun State is proactive in addressing this issue. Aware of the Federal Government’s numerous critical road projects, we have deployed our Ministries of Works and Environment to the site to identify the immediate cause of the blockage,” he explained.

“I have urged Mr. President to ensure that the Ministry of Works swiftly awards this road to a reliable contractor, and I am confident that they are working on it. However, Mr. President has also instructed that if we do not receive prompt assistance, the Ogun State government should take ownership of this section and proceed with repairs,” Governor Abiodun concluded.

He reassured motorists that the state is dedicated to resolving the issue quickly if federal support is delayed.
