The first accident occurred on the night of Thursday, August 22, 2024, in the Enugada area of Lafenwa, Abeokuta. A truck reportedly lost control, crashing into vehicles, pedestrians, and other road users. The accident resulted in six deaths, including that of a pregnant woman whose legs were crushed, an Okada rider with a crushed head, and a young woman with abdominal injuries. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) later confirmed three deaths and reported that brake failure caused the truck to lose control and collide with motorcycles. The injured were taken to the State Hospital, while the deceased were placed in the morgue.
On Friday, August 23, 2024, a second crash occurred in the Papalanto area, involving an Iveco Truck and a tricycle. The collision resulted in the deaths of a grandmother and her granddaughter, who were the only occupants of the tricycle. According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesman for the state-owned Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the truck driver fled the scene. The truck attempted to overtake the tricycle, dragging it and eventually running over it. The truck driver escaped before authorities arrived.
The remains of the deceased were returned to their families, and the injured tricycle driver was taken to an unknown hospital by a good Samaritan. The vehicles involved were taken to the Itori Divisional Police Command. Akinbiyi expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged motorists to avoid reckless driving.
