According to PUNCH Metro, the fire erupted after a petrol-laden tanker overturned at midnight near a commercial bank on the Ibafo section of the expressway. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver likely fell asleep at the wheel, resulting in the tanker losing control, leading to its explosion.

Our correspondent visited the affected community and noted that the petrol spill spread through a drainage system, impacting homes about a kilometer away. The fire caused significant damage, shattering windows and cracking walls of nearby buildings.

Ismail Emmanuel, the husband of the deceased, shared that smoke from the fire obstructed Mercy’s escape. He recounted her efforts to flee when she fell into a burning drainage, complicating rescue attempts. Despite their efforts to seek medical help, Ismail was unable to pay the required N6 million deposit at a hospital, and Mercy ultimately died at Gbagada General Hospital.

He expressed his grief, stating that Mercy’s body has been taken to a private morgue in Ibafo, and he pleaded for government assistance for his family.

A local resident, Bidemi, reported that another victim, known as Iya Ada, was also hospitalized after sustaining burns while trying to save her children. The fire destroyed her home, including furniture and other belongings.

Other victims have called on Governor Dapo Abiodun for aid, as many lost vehicles critical to their livelihoods. In response, the governor extended his condolences and urged tanker drivers to exercise greater caution on the roads.
