The Movement for Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta (MSDND) has accused Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), of making misleading claims regarding oil activities in the Niger Delta region. In a formal complaint addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the group disputed Kyari’s assertions about illegal refineries, oil theft, and illegal pipelines, as reported by the NNPCL.
The MSDND expressed strong disagreement with Kyari’s statements, asserting that they do not reflect the actual situation on the ground in the Niger Delta. They criticized Kyari’s remarks as deceptive, aimed at diverting attention from genuine issues.
According to Naija News, Kyari had stated that the NNPCL uncovered 38 illegal pipeline connections and 108 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta within six days. However, the MSDND rejected these claims, accusing Kyari of spreading falsehoods.
Kelvin Orughoe, the Publicity Secretary of MSDND, highlighted these concerns in their complaint, stating, “The NNPCL’s claims of 38 illegal pipeline connections and 108 illegal refineries are baseless and fabricated. These alleged sites do not exist in the Niger Delta region.”
The complaint further emphasized, “President Tinubu should scrutinize the figures presented by the NNPCL and Mr. Mele Kyari, as they are fabricated numbers that hold no truth. If such activities were real, the people of the Niger Delta would be severely affected. Instead of presenting false data, Mele Kyari and his associates should disclose the true locations of Nigeria’s crude oil losses.”
The dispute underscores ongoing tensions over the portrayal of oil-related issues in the Niger Delta, a critical region for Nigeria’s oil industry and local livelihoods.
