The President stated that the supplementary budget proposal is designed to foster prosperity, development, and progress, thereby accelerating the government’s ongoing positive strides. He made this announcement shortly after reintroducing the old national anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” at a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives in Abuja.

During this joint session, marking the Silver Jubilee of Nigeria’s 4th Republic, Tinubu urged the lawmakers to remain dedicated to serving their country.

Accompanying the President to the National Assembly Complex were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Governor of Borno State Babagana Zulum, and his son Seyi Tinubu, among other dignitaries.

Expressing his commitment to fulfilling his mandate, Tinubu reminded the lawmakers that nation-building is a collective effort involving all citizens. He emphasized that, as representatives of the people, they bear a significant responsibility.

“Charting a new path is about developing the right programs,” Tinubu said. “I submitted the 2024 budget, and you passed it swiftly. We are making progress. I will soon present the 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill. Building this nation so our grandchildren’s future is filled with prosperity, development, and progress is essential.”

He also urged the lawmakers to focus on internal efforts for nation-building, noting that foreign aid cannot create a country that Nigerians can truly be proud of.

“Our friends, old and new, to every Nigerian, I say congratulations for 25 years of unbroken democracy. Thank you for bringing us to this stage, for building the institution, for building this country,” he continued. “You are leaders who speak for our people, and you have been at the forefront of this institution. The hallowed chambers represent our consciousness of freedom and belonging.”

“This House embodies our diversity, representing all parts of our nation and how we come together as brothers and sisters. Without this House, I might not have found my path to the presidency. I started here, and that is why I show my respect to you this morning. Please continue to collaborate, work together, and build our country.”

“No foreign aid, no other institution or personality can help us unless we help ourselves. No amount of aid from foreign countries can do it. They prioritize their own interests first. Let us work together to build our nation, not just for ourselves but for future generations,” he added.

On January 1, 2024, Tinubu signed the N28.7 trillion 2024 Appropriation Bill into law after rigorous scrutiny by the National Assembly and budget defense by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. The budget size was an increase of N1.2 trillion from the N27.5 trillion proposed months earlier by the President.

After signing the document, the President pledged that the budget’s implementation would be “efficiently pursued and vigorously monitored.”
