One Of The Most Toxic Fish We Eat — Tjay Issues Warning Over Popular Nigerian Delicacy

Published

Former Big Brother Naija housemate and medical doctor, Tjay, has raised concerns about the possible health risks associated with consuming shawa fish, a popular dried fish commonly used in Nigerian meals.

In a video circulating online, Tjay warned that the fish may contain mould, cancer-linked chemicals and heavy metals, urging Nigerians to exercise caution when preparing and consuming it.

He pointed to a whitish substance sometimes found on the dried fish, identifying it as mould. He also claimed that shawa fish could contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a group of chemicals associated with potential cancer risks.

According to Tjay, soaking the fish before cooking may not necessarily eliminate all the potentially harmful substances it could contain.

Describing the fish as one of the most toxic varieties consumed in Nigeria, he advised consumers to take additional precautions during preparation.

Tjay recommended soaking shawa fish in water for at least one hour before removing its head and skin. He claimed that approximately 50 per cent of the toxins could be concentrated in the head.

He also encouraged Nigerians to opt for smaller-sized shawa fish, arguing that the smaller varieties may contain lower levels of harmful substances.

However, the claims shared by Tjay have not been independently established in the information provided, and consumers should seek guidance from qualified food-safety professionals or relevant health authorities for evidence-based advice on the safety and proper preparation of dried fish.
