He argued that such promises are an insult to the intelligence of the people, treating them as if they were naïve.

In an interview with Arise TV on August 20, Soludo clarified that his earlier comments were specifically directed at politicians in Anambra seeking to unseat him, who have promised to serve just one term if elected. He explained that, under the state’s zoning system, it is the turn of the North-Central zone to occupy the governorship, yet politicians from other zones are pushing to be elected by making such pledges.

According to him, these politicians know they cannot realistically implement their manifestos in a single term, making their one-term promises either deceitful or irrational.

“I said that in the context of debates within my state. When you have an established zoning arrangement, and someone tries to bypass it with sweet promises like, ‘I will only serve one term,’ they are clearly being disingenuous. Similar tactics were used in 2017 when my predecessor ran for a second term, but the people of Anambra saw through it and voted overwhelmingly for APGA, winning all 21 local government areas. Now, ahead of the upcoming elections, some politicians are resurfacing with the same promises,” Soludo said.

He continued, “I am from the South; the North has completed its turn, and now the South will serve. Yet, some candidates from the Southern Senatorial zone are promising one term. Looking at their manifestos, even 20 years would not be enough to implement them. Anyone making such claims is either deceitful or not thinking clearly, trying to take the people of Anambra for fools.”

Recall that on August 2, Soludo had earlier criticized politicians making one-term pledges, suggesting they needed psychiatric evaluation—a remark that sparked controversy, with some Nigerians assuming he was referring to Peter Obi, who had recently promised to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
