Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has called for compassion towards the aides of suspended Kogi Central lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Akpoti was suspended on Thursday, March 6, 2025, following allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. During the plenary session, Kalu proposed an amendment to the committee’s recommendations, which initially sought to withhold the salaries of Akpoti’s aides.
Arguing that the aides are employees of the National Assembly (NASS) and should not bear the consequences of their principal’s suspension, Kalu stressed the financial strain such a decision would place on them and their families.
“We cannot punish Senator Natasha’s aides for an offence they did not commit. They are National Assembly staff and depend solely on their salaries for survival. It would be unjust for us, as a Senate, to deprive them and their families of their earnings. I move that we amend that section and allow them to receive their salaries,” Kalu stated.
Despite his appeal, the Senate upheld its decision, refusing to reconsider the payment of salaries to Akpoti’s legislative aides.
