Governor Okpebholo Speaks On Ovia Tragedy: ‘Justice Will Be Served, Security Strengthened’

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to ensure that those responsible for the February 21 attacks, which resulted in deaths across seven communities in Ovia South West Local Government Area, are brought to justice.
During a visit to the affected areas on Thursday, March 6, 2025, the Governor reaffirmed his commitment to restoring lasting peace and security in the region. He also revealed plans to establish a police outpost to prevent further violence and reinforce law enforcement efforts.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the safety of residents remains his administration’s top priority, and no crime would be left unpunished.
“From what I have heard and the investigations conducted, these criminals are invading your farms to steal the crops you’ve worked hard to cultivate. As a government, we will hunt them down. I assure you that peace is on the way,” the Governor stated.
“No individual should wield more power than an entire community, burning homes and killing people just to steal farm produce. Wherever these criminals are hiding, we will track them down, bring them to justice, and restore peace,” he added.
The Governor called on residents to remain calm and refrain from taking matters into their own hands. He assured them of the government’s intervention and warned against retaliation.
“I understand your pain, but I ask you to remain calm. Do not engage in violence. Keep the peace as you have been doing. We are working to ensure you feel the presence of the government and experience real development,” Governor Okpebholo urged.
“We have already deployed soldiers to the area and added three more Operation Rescue patrol vehicles to support them. Upon my return to Benin, I will work with the Commissioner of Police to fast-track the establishment of a police outpost to ensure lasting security,” he continued.
In his efforts to foster peace, Governor Okpebholo also met with leaders and residents of Gbelebe, a neighboring Ijaw community. He urged for unity and reassured them of the government’s commitment to their well-being.
“My core mission as Governor is to restore peace and bring development. Without peace, there can be no progress. These killings and conflicts must end. This is a large community with no roads or electricity, and yet criminality persists instead of focusing on development. I assure you, my administration will bring meaningful development here gradually,” the Governor promised.
