The clip, which surfaced over the weekend, showed Kalu giving a man a tour of his luxury property in Potomac, Maryland, USA. During the tour, the guest also pointed out that the former Senate Chief Whip owns additional properties in Texas, North Carolina, and the United Kingdom. He described the Potomac home as a prime estate overlooking the River Potomac, surrounded by other wealthy residents.
The video sparked criticism from some Nigerians, who alleged that the mansion was acquired with funds looted while Kalu held public office.
Addressing the controversy in a new video released on Tuesday, September 10, Kalu dismissed the claims. He explained that the mansion was bought in 2003 with proceeds from a house he previously owned in Mattapan, Boston, Massachusetts.
“I had a house in Boston which I sold, and I used the money to buy my current home in Washington, D.C. This same house was praised by Obasanjo during my tenure as governor in 2003, and US authorities even reviewed it when George Bush was president.
I purchased it before I became governor, and it was duly listed in my asset declaration. The properties are in my name, openly. I didn’t buy them to hide anything. That particular house was acquired in 2003,” he said.
