Oshiomhole emphasized that correctional institutions are intended to rehabilitate, not harm, individuals. He lamented that 50 percent of the prison population is awaiting trial, highlighting the legal principle that individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“We even take care of dogs better than Nigerian prisoners. The bad news is that out of the 80,000 prisoners, 50% are awaiting trial,” he said. “In our laws, you are presumed innocent until found guilty. Oppression is the name of the game. A person will tell you, ‘I will teach you a lesson,’ and with the connection of the DPO, he can teach you more lessons than you can ever imagine.”

Oshiomhole also criticized the negative portrayal of Nigeria and its currency by foreign entities. He argued that Nigeria should define its own identity and not be swayed by external opinions.

“In Nigeria, our people will go to the World Bank, and they will tell us who we are. We are supposed to define who we are, not foreigners. Until we adopt home-grown policies and face the consequences, because they are going to fight us, we will have problems,” he added. “To secure the future, we must interrogate the immediate past.”
